Tiger poaching comes under court scanner
The Free Press Journal
|September 18, 2025
The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought responses from the Centre, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and others on a PIL seeking a CBI probe into an alleged organised tigerpoaching and illegal wildlifetrade racket operating in Maharashtra and MP.
-
A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran issued notice while hearing the plea filed by lawyer Gaurav Kumar Bansal.
Bansal highlighted the grave threat posed to the tiger population by organised poaching syndicates operating across state and national boundaries.
At the outset, Bansal said at least 30 per cent of tigers live outside designated tiger reserves and referred to news reports of large-scale poaching.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati appeared for the Centre and other authorities and was asked to take instructions on the petition.
