SIMs misuse: DoT will hold mobile users liable
The Free Press Journal
|November 25, 2025
Mobile subscribers may face legal action if a SIM card taken in their name is found to be used for cyber fraud or other illegal activities, the Department of Telecom (DoT) said on Monday.
In an official statement, the DoT said the original user “may also be held liable as an offender in cases where SIM cards procured in their name are subsequently misused.”
The department advised citizens to be cautious and warned against using mobile devices with tampered IMEI numbers. It also cautioned people not to buy or use procured or assembled devices such as modems, modules and SIM boxes that have configurable or tampered IMEIs.
