Political ground shifting to Democrats as Zohran Mamdani scripts history to be NY’s first Indian-origin Muslim mayor
Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Indian-origin democratic socialist, scripted history by winning the fiercely contested New York City mayoral polls, becoming the first South Asian, Muslim and youngest in acentury to helm the worlds financial capital.
His victory - marked by emotional tributes, political defiance, and even a Bollywood twist - has been hailed as a turning point for progressive politics in America.
Mamdani, son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani, defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. The Queens state assemblyman secured over 50% of the votes, emerging victorious in a race that drew global attention.
In a stirring victory address at Brooklyn Paramount Theater, Mamdani invoked India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s iconic “Tryst with Destiny” speech from 1947, describing his win as the dawn of a “new age” for New York.
"Standing before you, I think of the words of Jawaharlal Nehru a moment comes, but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance. Tonight, we have stepped out from the old into the new," Mamdani said amid loud cheers.
