A wooden platform supporting one of the iconic Chinese fishing nets at Vasco da Gama Square in Fort Kochi gave way under a group of foreign visitors, sending seven of them—six German tourists and one companion—into the 15-foot-deep backwaters.

The excursion was part of a group of roughly 20 tourists, led by a North Indian tour guide, when the collapse occurred. Local rescuers swiftly brought the travellers to safety. The mishap occurred as the tourists climbed onto the aged platform despite repeated warnings from nearby residents about its decaying condition.
