India, Bhutan finalise ₹4,000 cr rail projects

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday announced India’s plans to connect India and Bhutan through rail links.
In a joint press conference with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in New Delhi, the railway minister said India would have two rail links with Bhutan: one from Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, and Banarhat in West Bengal to Samtse. Built at %4,033 crore, the links will be the first in a set of rail connectivity projects between India and Bhutan.
“The Kokrajar-Gelephu line connects to Bongaigaon, a major industrial hub in India. Kokrajar serves as the regional station, linking the project to the Indian railway network. In essence, by constructing 70 km of new track, Bhutan gains access to 150,000 km of India’s railway network. t demonstrates the significant advantage of the network effect,” said the minister.
