Congress balances pressure over case timing

Questions over the political timing of the sexual assault case registered against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil set off a measured yet charged response from the Congress party, which sought to highlight what it described as a pattern of sensational allegations surfacing ahead of elections while stopping short of aligning itself with demands for the legislators resignation.The party’s leadership signalled a cautious approach as rival political blocs intensified calls for him to vacate his Assembly seat.

United Democratic Front convener Adoor Prakash said the development aligned with what he characterised as a familiar tactic deployed by the CPM during campaign periods.

Speaking to reporters, he argued that the case's timing raised legitimate doubts, adding that the ruling party appeared intent on steering the public conversation away from the Sabarimala gold theft and other governance issues as the state prepare for local body elections.

His remarks came as both the CPM and the BJP escalated their pressure campaign, framing the matter asa test of political accountability.
