Vijayan says Kerala’s infant mortality rate better than US
The Free Press Journal - Indore
|November 02, 2025
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who declared the elimination of extreme poverty in the state, in what critics see as unmitigated self-praise, claimed that — Kerala’s infant mortality rate was even better than the United States’.
Vijayan said that Kerala's rate has dropped to five deaths per 1,000 live births, surpassing the United States’ reported 5.6 per 1,000 and marking the lowest rate among India’s larger states. Health minister Veena George described the figure as proof that its infant-care infrastructure achieves parity in both rural and urban regions.
Kerala’s maternal mortality ratio is also among the lowest in India, around 19 deaths per 100,000 live births in earlier estimates — notably lower than many Indian states and even comparable to high-income nations.
