Chidambaram challenges Hindi titles

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has criticised what he described as an expanding pattern of the Union government using Hindi words written in English script in the titles of Bills introduced in Parliament, arguing that the practice marginalises non-Hindi-speaking citizens and states and undermines the principle of linguistic equality embedded in the Constitution.

Posting on X, the former Union minister said he was opposed to the use of transliterated Hindi expressions in legislative titles, contending that such naming conventions make it difficult for many citizens to identify, understand or even pronounce the names of Bills and Acts. He characterised the trend as an “affront” to people whose primary language is not Hindi and warned that it risks weakening
