ZOHRAN MAMDANI AND DONALD TRUMP: A POLITICAL SHOWDOWN IN NYC

Zohran Mamdani has emerged as a progressive force in New York politics.

A 34-year-old Democrat, he won the party's mayoral primary in June in a stunning upset. Mamdani is an immigrant's son - born in Kampala, Uganda to Indian parents (his mother is acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and his father a political scholar) - and he identifies as a Muslim and democratic socialist. He has campaigned on radical affordability reforms: pledging to freeze rents, offer free universal child care and fare-free city buses, funded by higher taxes on the wealthy. (“Together, New York ... universal child care!... tax the rich!” chants the campaign slogan.) This populist message, focused on working families, has propelled Mamdani to the front of the race. Backed by progressive leaders like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, he portrays himself as “Donald Trump's worst nightmare” - an outsider ready to fight entrenched interests. Indeed, Mamdani’s rise from near-obscurity to “the verge of running the biggest city in the United States” has been fueled by vows to fix New York's crushing cost-of-living crises. His self-styled socialist policies (on housing, transit, education and immigration) mark him as one of the city’s most left-wing candidates in generations.
