UP Govt's River Revival Project: Giving New Life to Lifeline Rivers
The Daily Guardian
|July 28, 2025
Uttar Pradesh is famous for its rich cultural heritage and natural resources. But in the last few decades, many small rivers and tributaries in the state have dried up or become polluted due to industrialization, urbanization, and pollution.
To tackle these problems, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched an ambitious project aimed at reviving 75 small rivers. This project is being run under the 'One District, One River' initiative, which focuses on reviving at least one river in every district.
This campaign started in 2018 under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), but now it has been made stronger with technical support. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the government has partnered with top technical institutes like IIT Kanpur, IIT BHU, IIT Roorkee, and BBAU Lucknow. These institutes are doing detailed studies on the rivers' geography, ecology, and social factors to create specific plans for each river.
