The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the West Bengal Government to let assistant teachers who have not been found guilty of any wrongdoing to continue working in State schools for now, citing the academic interest of students in Classes 9 to 12.

It directed the State Government to initiate a fresh recruitment process by May 31 and complete it by December 31.

However, the breather failed to enthuse large sections of the sacked teachers who are sitting in dharna for days.

The apex court also said that no non-teaching staff or teachers identified as tainted will be allowed to remain in their posts. It directed the West Bengal Government, the State Education Board, and the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) to submit an affidavit by May 31. The affidavit must include an advertisement for fresh recruitment of teachers and a written assurance that the selection process will be completed by December 31, 2025.

The Supreme Court said those currently allowed to continue as teachers would not receive any benefit in the upcoming recruitment test.
