Torn Lands, Torn Lives: Partition's Pain Revisited
The Daily Guardian
|April 29, 2025
From the ashes of Partition to the blood in Pahalgam, the subcontinent's sorrow still whispers through broken borders and unhealed hearts.
-
A recent terror attack in Pahalgam has once again brought the events of the 1947 Partition into sharp focus. This event, which led to the displacement of over a million people and ultimately 15 million, continues to influence the political landscape of the subcontinent. The Partition Museum in Amritsar stands as a testament to preserving the memories and stories of those affected. Authors like Khushwant Singh and Saadat Hasan Manto have poignant insights into the human cost of Partition in their writings, offering invaluable insights into this tumultuous period.
The historic Town of Amritsar, the Partition Museum stands as a testament to one of the subcontinent's most traumatic events, the Partition of 1947. Inaugurated on August 17, 2017 by The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TA-CHT), the museum is India's first dedicated museum preserving the stories and experiences of Partition. Its mission is to serve as a repository of memories, ensuring that the experiences of those affected are not forgotten.
The museum's exhibits are meticulously curated to create an immersive experience. Visitors can explore a range of galleries that chronologically trace the events leading up to Partition, the violence that ensued, and the experiences of those who lived through it. Personal photographs, objects donated by survivors and their families offer glimpses into lives disrupted by the division. Artefacts, such as a traditional rope cot carried across the border by a refugee or an antique pocket watch belonging to a victim of mob violence, humanise the vast statistics associated with Partition.
