The latest predicament in the jobs market is the trend among several acclaimed enterprises including the likes of IBM, Google, and Elon Musk's Tesla, doing away with the need for a traditional degree. As encouraging as this trend seems, it has the propensity to affect corporate and student communities. Students are likely to compare the traditional educational models with that of short-term courses.

The belief that a four-year degree from a prestigious institution alone may not hold water and would require candidates with either more industry experience or skillsets creates surprise. But it demands a nuanced acknowledgement from academicians and corporate captains. After all, this industry pattern is far more complex—what with a World Economic Forum report indicating the need to reskill half the workforce by 2025. It is worth understanding the reasons for this trend and the future for reskilling.
