The fierce vira Ganapati and his vetala weapon
The Daily Guardian
|August 27, 2025
This shloka evokes the fierce and majestic image of Vira Ganapati, one of the 32 classical forms of Lord Ganesha described in texts like the Mudgala Purana, in all his unique glory.

vetala shakti shara karumukha chakrakanga khadanga mudgara gadaakusha nagapasham shoolam cha kunta parashu dhvajakudhvabantam veeram ganeshamarunam satatam smarami
His sixteen arms themselves are striking: each arm bears a weapon—discus, trident, sword, mace, goad, arrow, bow, spear, axe, shield, hammer, noose... the list unfolds like a cosmic arsenal.
But among these, one arm holds something altogether unexpected—a tiny goblin-like being, the Vetala.
This Vetala is a symbol of transformation. It has not just been conquered. What is terribly feared has been turned into something that guards us.
This is courage that doesn't annihilate darkness but converts it, tames it, and turns it into a protector.
HERE'S A BRIEF RETELLING OF THE FOLK TALE: In the depths of a forest near a cremation ground dwelt a dreaded spirit, the Vetala, who clung to corpses and haunted all who passed.
Travellers and sages alike feared its power to possess the living and bring misfortune.
Whenever sages came to the forest to perform sacred rites, the Vetala tried to obstruct them, stirring unrest by possessing animals and spreading fear.
Eventually, their cries reached Lord Ganesha, who instantly appeared in his fierce warrior form, Vira Ganapati, astride his mouse Mushika.
The Vetala mocked and tried to frighten him with ghostly shrieks and dark spells, but Ganesha stood unmoved.
Casting his noose, he bound the spirit fast.
However, instead of destroying it, he spoke with calm authority, urging the Vetala to give up its malice.
Humbled, the Vetala submitted, vowing to protect rather than torment.
Blessed by Ganesha, it became an attendant of his fierce form, symbolising how even the most chaotic forces can be transformed into guardians of good.
