Silent exodus in Iran

Over the past two weeks, tens of thousands of Afghan migrants have fled or been forcibly deported from Iran, as authorities accelerate a sweeping crackdown on undocumented foreigners.

Silent exodus in Iran

Tehran claims the move is essential to preserve national security and alleviate economic burdens, but human rights observers call it a politically charged purge with dangerous humanitarian consequences.

Iran's Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi defended the policy, stating, "Iran cannot become a haven for illegal entry. Our national economy and social order must be protected."

According to Iranian state media, over 50,000 Afghans have been "voluntarily repatriated" or expelled since late June, though advocacy groups say the number is far higher and the returns are far from voluntary.

This crackdown coincides with rising domestic frustrations in Iran. Inflation is soaring, youth unemployment remains high, and protests have flared over water shortages and government repression. Analysts suggest the Afghan community—long a scapegoat—is being targeted to deflect public anger away from Tehran's internal failings.
