SC allows green firecrackers in NCR on test basis

In a major relief ahead of Diwali, the Supreme Court on Wednesday relaxed its earlier blanket prohibition on firecrackers in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), permitting the sale and use of green firecrackers on a test basis between October 18 and 20, 2025.
A Bench of Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran said the move sought a "balanced approach" between festive celebrations and environmental protection. "We have to permit in moderation while not compromising environmental concerns," the bench observed.
Under the order, bursting of firecrackers is allowed only between 6-7 a.m. and 8-10 p.m. on the day before Diwali and on Diwali day.
The Court clarified that the relaxation is purely experimental, and its impact will be reviewed before any further extension.
