Polo in Rajasthan: The Royal Game of the Desert State
The Daily Guardian

Rajasthan, the land of kings and warriors, is not only known for its majestic forts, colorful traditions, and rich culture but also for preserving and promoting one of the world's oldest and most aristocratic sports—Polo.
With a history deeply rooted in the princely states, polo in Rajasthan reflects valor, elegance, and royal grandeur. Over the centuries, it has evolved from a battle-training game for cavalry to an internationally recognized sport and a cultural hallmark of Rajasthan.
Origins of Polo in India and its Arrival in Rajasthan
Polo traces its roots back over two thousand years to Central Asia. From there, it made its way to Persia and was introduced to the Indian subcontinent by Muslim rulers. Initially played as a war-training activity for cavalrymen, the game was later adapted into a sport of nobility and valor.
In Rajasthan, polo gained popularity during the 19th century under British colonial rule, particularly with the support of the royal families of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Alwar. These princely states adopted polo not just as a sport but as a statement of regality and status. It became a symbol of prestige and gallantry, enjoyed by kings, princes, and noble warriors.
The Royal Patronage and Jaipur's Prominence
Rajasthan's most significant contribution to Indian polo came from Jaipur, especially under the leadership of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II.
A skilled player himself, Maharaja Man Singh established polo as an organized sport in the region. He was instrumental in forming the Jaipur Polo Club, which later became the Rajasthan Polo Club—one of the oldest and most prestigious polo institutions in the country.
Under his leadership, the Jaipur Polo Team rose to international fame. In the 1930s, this team gained recognition for winning numerous championships in the United Kingdom and India. Between 1930 and 1938, the Jaipur team secured a string of victories, establishing itself as a powerhouse in the sport. This era marked the golden period of polo in Rajasthan and India.
