Remember the time you would check thick phone books or dial directory assistance to try and find a person's number? It was easy for most of us in the past to recall many of our main contacts such as family, friends and the people from our neighbourhood. Try to think of an answer, honestly: are you able to recall more than a small number of phone numbers yourself or do you have to check your phone?

It does not mean that we are not as smart or cannot use our brains as before. Technology has revolutionized the ways we keep, find and manage our data. At first, phones were simple for storing numbers, but now they are much richer, with photos, links to social platforms and detailed records. Because of our use of extended memory, we do not remember many numbers individually but are able to connect more ideas.

Many reasons have made Google influential in the same way. Instead of making us think less, it has helped us handle many types of information quickly. We don't keep facts in mind as much as we did before, but we might know much more about a wider variety of things than we used to.
