Karur stampede toll rises to 41, Stalin, Sitharaman promise relief

The death toll in the Karur stampede during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay's campaign rally has climbed to 41, after a 65-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital on Monday. Among the victims are 18 women, 13 men, five young girls and five young boys.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, accompanied by Union Minister L. Murugan and Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran, met the bereaved families and assured them of all assistance. She said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally directed her to visit Karur and console victims’ families, adding that compensation would be credited directly to their accounts. “Most of them are from poor families. I will personally monitor that the Prime Minister’s relief reaches them,” she said.
