Jharkhand's election history reflects decades of tribal struggles, coalition governments, and shifting alliances, symbolising resilience and evolving political aspirations.

JHARKHAND'S BALLOT BATTLES

Nestled in the heart of eastern India, Jharkhand, with its bountiful natural resources, has always held the promise of prosperity. Carved out of Bihar on November 15, 2000, as India's 28th state, Jharkhand boasts pristine lakes, dense forests, rugged mountains, and an abundant supply of minerals like coal, iron ore, and bauxite. Yet, this potential powerhouse has been shackled by political instability, corrup tion, and mismanagement for much of its existence, stalling its progress and depriving its people of the development they deserve.

The state's 23-year journey has been a turbulent one, marked by a succession of governments, coalition dramas, and periods of President's Rule. Between 2005 and 2014, Jharkhand witnessed an extraordinary political upheaval, with seven Chief Ministers taking the reins, alongside three spells of Central Rule. This phrase became synonymous with rampant corruption, highlighted by the rise of Madhu Koda, an independent MLA who improbably ascended to the Chief Minister's chair.

THE BIRTH OF JHARKHAND: A HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT

Jharkhand's creation on November 15, 2000, fulfilled a long-standing demand of the region's tribal population for autonomy. This demand had been championed by tribal leaders like Jaipal Singh Munda, who first raised the issue in India's Constituent Assembly, and later by Shibu Soren, the face of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

The BJP, under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, played a pivotal role in realizing this dream.

imageThe state's formation was heralded as a victory for tribal identity, autonomy and the promise of development. However, the seeds of political instability were sown early, as disputes over leadership and alliances emerged.
