US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports, citing New Delhi's continued purchase of oil from Russia. These tariffs are expected to hurt Indian exports—particularly textiles, gems and related sectors—threatening jobs and growth.
Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Japan has acquired special significance.
Modi is in Tokyo on 29-30 August for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit—his first stand-alone visit to Japan in nearly seven years, and his maiden meeting with the new Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba. The central question: what can India expect from this trip? Can it find a counter to Trump's tariffs?
