Forces Behind India-Pakistan Partition
The Daily Guardian
|April 28, 2025
The partition of India in 1947 was one of the most significant and tragic events in the history of the Indian subcontinent. It led to the creation of two separate nations—India and Pakistan—dividing the subcontinent along religious lines.
The partition was not only a political event but also a social catastrophe that caused massive displacement, loss of lives, and deep-rooted tensions between the people of India and Pakistan.
This article explores the reasons behind the partition, the key figures involved, the political dynamics, and the long-lasting impact of this division.
THE BACKGROUND
The Indian subcontinent was a unified entity under British colonial rule from 1858 until 1947. During this period, India witnessed significant social, economic, and political changes under British rule.
The British Empire established a system of governance that took advantage of the region's diverse religious, cultural, and linguistic groups. This diversity was initially sidelined in British administration but eventually became a source of tension as nationalist movements gained strength in the early 20th century. The rise of Indian nationalism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to the formation of the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1885, which began advocating for greater autonomy for Indians under British rule. At the same time, the All India Muslim League was formed in 1906, which, over time, began pushing for the rights and interests of Muslims in India.
KEY FIGURES & PARTIES INVOLVED
Indian National Congress (INC): The INC, led by figures like Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, became the primary political force advocating for Indian independence. Its vision was for a unified India where people of all religions, including Hindus and Muslims, could coexist under a secular government.
