Eco-tourism in Rajasthan: A journey through nature, culture, and conservation

Rajasthan, known globally for its majestic forts, desert landscapes, and vibrant culture, is now emerging as a compelling destination for eco-tourism.
Traditionally associated with royal grandeur and bustling cities like Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur, Rajasthan is increasingly being recognized for its natural heritage, biodiversity, and efforts in sustainable tourism.
Ecotourism, which emphasizes responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and improve the well-being of local people, is gradually taking root across the state.
THE LANDSCAPE OF ECO-TOURISM IN RAJASTHAN
Rajasthan's varied geography—from the Thar Desert in the west to the Aravalli hills in the east—makes it an ideal setting for eco-tourism. The state boasts a number of wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, eco-villages, and protected forest areas, which offer travelers an opportunity to experience nature while contributing to conservation and local development.
Some of the key destinations that promote eco-tourism in Rajasthan include:
1. RANTHAMBORE NATIONAL PARK (SAWAI MADHOPUR)
One of India's most renowned tiger reserves, Ranthambore offers visitors a chance to witness Bengal tigers in their natural habitat. Safari tours are regulated to minimize human impact, and eco-resorts near the park promote sustainable hospitality through solar energy, water harvesting, and employment of locals.
2. KEOLADEO GHANA BIRD SANCTUARY (BHARATPUR)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this bird sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers. Thousands of migratory birds from across the world visit the park, including the rare Siberian crane. Ecotourism initiatives include guided bicycle tours, local birding experts, and eco-lodges that reduce plastic use and support wetland conservation.
3. DESERT NATIONAL PARK (JAISALMER)
