Opposition figures have speculated that Dhankhar's resignation is linked to internal tensions within the BJP. Others suggested it may have been triggered by a desire to install a more pliant Vice President ahead of contentious legislative sessions.

How the Vice President is Elected in India: The Vice President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of: All members (elected and nominated) of the Lok Sabha. All members (elected and nominated) of the Rajya Sabha.
This differs from the Presidential election, which also includes members of State Legislative Assemblies. In the Vice Presidential election, every MP has one vote, and the value of each vote is the same.
The election is conducted using a proportional representation system through a single transferable vote (STV). MPs mark their preferences on the ballot paper (1, 2, 3, etc.). To win, a candidate must secure more than half of the valid votes cast. If no candidate reaches this quota in the first count, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are transferred according to second preferences. This continues until one candidate achieves the required quota.
