India's journey
India's journey in combating cancer is akin to La river carving its path through diverse terrain navigating ancient traditions, embracing modern innovations, and integrating global advancements. This odyssey reflects a nation's resilience and adaptability in the face of a formidable adversary.
The earliest documented cases of cancer in India date back to the 17th century. Between 1860 and 1910, several audits and cancer case series were published by Indian medical practitioners, marking the initial recognition of the disease within the subcontinent.
A landmark study by Nath and Grewal, utilizing autopsy, pathology, and clinical data between 1917 and 1932, confirmed that cancer was a common cause of death among middle-aged and elderly Indians.
In 1941, the Tata Memorial Hospital was established in Mumbai by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, serving as a cornerstone for cancer treatment and research in India.
