Probe into Russia's drive to recruit SA women

The Citizen

August 25, 2025

Russian companies are widening their campaign to find young African women to fill a labour shortage, heightening concern many are being deployed in the Ukraine war effort.

The latest drive is in South Africa, a member of the emerging market economies - Brics.

One of the main recruiters, Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Tatarstan, produces military drones.

The government is now investigating the Russian companies and what their intentions are, a person familiar with the situation said. The push involves organisations using Brics branding.

The local chapter of the Brics Women's Business Alliance signed an agreement in May to supply Alabuga and house builder Etalonstroi Ural with a combined 5 600 workers next year.
