OPTION: A DIVERSIFIED APPROACH IS IDEAL
The question: My wife and I have R500 000 to invest and are considering dividing this equally into separate fixed deposit accounts. We have already maxed out our annual contributions to our separate tax-free savings accounts (TFSAs). Could you advise if fixed deposits would be the most suitable option for investing our savings and are there other options with greater growth potential?
We would prefer a five-year investment, strategy and asset allocation crucial period, but with the ability to access funds when necessary. Most importantly, preserving our capital is our top priority.
The answer: I think a few principles need to be considered here—first, product choice, not only for liquidity but also for tax efficiency and estate planning purposes and second, strategy and asset allocation.
