This may or may not be the result of climate change, but did you notice that this year your roses didn't come to a standstill after pruning in July? At our rose farm outside Pretoria, we had some very cold spells but no frost which normally sends the roses into dormancy. Unlike previous years, we left the strong young stems on the roses when we pruned and some are starting to flower.

In fact, all the roses sprouted quickly after pruning, developing a top growth of green leaves that started to feed the roots. That extra power down to the roots has pushed out basal stems from the base of the rose.

It is wonderful to see these new red juicy stems because the roses will now form a strong structure for summer.
