Checkers to open flagship in PnP Hyde Park space
The Citizen
|March 18, 2025
Landlord Hyprop Investments has confirmed the Shoprite Group will in July open a flagship Checkers store in the space vacated by Pick n Pay at Hyde Park Corner in Johannesburg.
-
The Pick n Pay closed its doors end September 2024 as part of the group's broader strategy to optimise its store estate. It is understood the store was not profitable.
Pick n Pay CEO Sean Summers has been candid on the group's plan to reset its store estate. There are certain underperforming stores it would keep as these are strategic (to avoid ceding market share to rival Checkers, for example), but he said a total of 100 stores were "under review" and that it would either shut or convert these to franchises or to subsidiary Boxer's stores.
Following intervention, it has managed to get some of these to profitability, and they will no longer be closed. Hyde Park was not one of those.
