Niren Tolsi is a 48-year-old South African journalist, arts practitioner and documentary film-maker based in Cape Town.

He is the recipient of the Ruth First Fellowship and the Heinrich Böll Journalism Fellowship.
He has won several awards for his journalism, including the 2009 South African Journalist of the Year (feature category), the 2016 South African Arts Journalist of the Year and the 2018 SAB Sports Writer of the Year award in the feature category.
The 2018 award was for a long-form piece that explored the symbolism of Proteas batsman Hashim Amla's success published in The Cricket Monthly and included in this collection.
Tolsi is a research associate at the Society, Work and Politics Institute at Wits University.
Having spent most of his journalism career at the Mail & Guardian, Tolsi has also worked as Times Media Group's deputy legal editor and has been published extensively in South Africa and internationally. His major work is the ongoing "slow journalism" project, After Marikana.
He was one of the co-founders of The Con, a now defunct literary and long-form magazine produced in Johannesburg from 2014-2017.
