SEASON: WARM THE EYE ON COLD HIGHVELD DAYS
Aloes are setting the landscape on fire with their orange and yellow flower spikes that warm the eye on a cold winter's day. Winter is their season to flower, just as everything else starts to turn brown. What better time to add more of these beauties to the garden? Make a show by planting them in large groups or massed in beds where they can be easily enjoyed for their flowers.
Even when not in flower, aloes make a statement with their sculptural grey-green leaves, serrated edges and regal stance.
They fit in with today's demand for gardens that are sleek and stylish, drought tolerant and easy to maintain.
Aloes are almost indestructible plants and once established they have low water needs. They suit our highveld winter with its sunny days and cold nights, although in very cold gardens it is a good idea to protect with frost cloth.
