REGIS LE BRIS accepts Anthony Patterson is experiencing a “new situation” as he sits on the sidelines at Sunderland - but the Black Cats boss has urged the North Shields-born shot-stopper to learn from Robin Roefs as he looks to force his way back into the first team.

It's a new situation for Anthony Patterson at Sunderland and head coach Regis Le Bris recognises it's difficult for the shot-stopper.

The 25-year-old was an ever-present after breaking into the first team under Alex Neil and played a vital role in Sunderland's promotion to the Premier League.

The arrival of Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen in the summer has changed everything for Patterson.

The Dutchman has started every league game so far this season as he has made a stellar start to life in English football.

Sunderland's early exit from the Carabao Cup further diminished the likelihood of Patterson getting any game time.
