Proposal for new homes on former schools' site
The Chronicle
|March 13, 2026
TWO former Northumberland schools are to be sold off and the land set to be developed into housing.
Astley Community High School in Seaton Delaval Whytrig Middle School in Seaton Delaval
Up to 135 new homes are set to be built on the former Astley High and Whytrig Middle School site in the Seaton Valley along with two retail units and associated car parking.
County councillors agreed to accept offers from commercial developer Derwent Manor Ventures and house builder Miller Homes at a meeting on Tuesday.
Of the proposed new homes, 20 will be designated as affordable and will be obtained by the council and used as social housing.
The retail unit will be built on the Astley site. The sale price agreed by the council was not made public due to commercial sensitivities.
The schools have been vacant since the new, council-built super school opened last year.
