A ONE-EYE seal who wouldn't have survived in the wild is set for a new life after undergoing surgery.

- By DANIEL HALL

Popeye was rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) on Crimdon Beach in County Durham in July when he was aged between just seven and 10 days old.

Weighing less than 9kg, poorly Popeye was extremely thin and dehydrated when he was transferred to Tynemouth Seal Hospital on July 12.

As his carers tried to get him up to a healthy weight, they noticed that the pup had a severe eye infection.

Though he received treatment and medication to try and control the infection, Popeye's eye ruptured.

He was taken to BDMLR’s North East Seal Triage (NEST) unit at Robson and Prescott vets’ Whorral Bank Hospital in Morpeth on August 26, which opened on January 31 this year and is “like an A&E for seals”.
