Howe says he never lost belief that he had backing from Newcastle United fans - but admits he was thankful to hear his name chanted at Burnley. The head coach watched on as his side climbed away from the bottom half thanks to goals from Joelinton, Yoane Wissa and Bruno Guimaraes.

The three points were toasted by 2,300 fans as they enjoyed an end of year victory against relegation-threatened Burnley.

When asked on the backing, Howe admitted: "I've always felt that here, I've never felt any different, and that for me has been our key strength, the unity of the football club from supporters to the team.
