FOR many of us, it will seem barely conceivable that 25 years have passed since the dawning of the year 2000. Was it really that long ago? It was a year which was the gateway to a new century, a new millennium, and a new age.

Our 10 photographs from the Chronicle archive - one image for each year - recall some of what was going on in Newcastle between 2000 and 2009.
The arrival of the new millennium was marked by a giant fireworks display on Newcastle Quayside, watched by tens of thousands who flocked there to celebrate.
Elsewhere, from 2001, we see folk crossing the newly-opened Gateshead Millennium Bridge, which linked Gateshead to Newcastle on the other side of the River Tyne.
