ARCH MANIPULATOR' WHO WIELDED 'EXTREME POWER'

- By SOPHIE DOUGHTY Crime reporter

A MEDOMSLEY sex predator was one of the worst abusers in UK history. That's the view of the man behind an investigation into the horrors that went on at the County Durham detention centre.

And the culture of silence and fear at Medomsley made the ideal environment for him to abuse countless victims 'provided by the state'.

In his report, Prisons and Probation Ombudsman Adrian Usher said Neville Husband, who worked in the kitchens at the centre, wielded “extreme power” over both victims and staff at the centre.

He said: “He may well have been one of, if not the most, prolific sexual offenders in our history.”

Once behind the gates of Medomsley Detention Centre, detainees were subjected to horrific violence and psychological abuse by staff, with the report saying thousands of young men were physically abused.
