29 new electric buses to operate across North East

ANOTHER 29 electric buses will operate across the North East from early next year.

Three busy routes, operated by Go North East, will go electric in 2026. It will take the number of electric buses running in the region from 38 to 67.

The move is part of North East Mayor Kim McGuinness’ plans to get rid of all diesel buses within a decade.

The three Go North East routes, which account for almost 100,000 journeys each week, are:

■ The ‘Angel’ 21 route between Chester-le-Street and Newcastle;

■ The X66 Metrocentre to Gateshead express service; and

■ The 58 linking Newcastle, Heworth and the giant Amazon distribution centre at Follingsby.

The buses promise zero emissions, a smoother ride for customers, and improved accessibility for wheelchair users as they enter service in the new year following driver familiarisation.
