£23m car park finally set to open after huge delays

A MULTI-MILLION pound car park meant to serve the Gateshead Quays’ unbuilt arena and conference centre is finally set to open.
Council bosses have confirmed that the Gateshead Quays multi-storey car park, in Hawks Road, is scheduled to open later this month.
The facility was designed to serve the promised 12,500-seat arena and international conference centre which are earmarked for a prime patch of vacant lead between the Glasshouse concert centre and Baltic art gallery.
That “world class” development has stalled due to escalating costs and the car park itself has been left fenced off.
Gateshead Council leader Martin Gannon said last November that the publicly-funded car park was “not fit for use” and revealed that the local authority had been withholding payments to its builders until issues with the site had been resolved.
