Tuggar Slams US Visa Ban as Barrier to West Africa-US Trade
The Business NG
|The BusinessNG
Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has criticized the United States’ recent visa restrictions on ECOWAS countries warning that such policies threaten economic and diplomatic engagement between West Africa and Washington.
-
Speaking at the 54th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council in Abuja on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Tuggar said the ban—if enforced—would be “most unfortunate,” as it undermines the region's readiness to do business with the US.
"We in this part of the world are students of the Art of the Deal," the Minister said. "West Africa has long been a player in international trade, even before the modern state system. We are open for partnerships based on mutual needs. The question is—who is willing to seize that opportunity?”
