Women’s quota: Supreme Court asks when, not whether

Nearly two years after Parliament passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, the new law reserving one-third of Lok Sabha and state Assembly seats for women is back in court—not on whether it is valid, but when it will actually bite.

On November 10, a Supreme Court Bench of Justices BV. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan issued notice to the Centre on a public interest petition by Congress leader Jaya Thakur, seeking immediate implementation of the 33% quota without waiting for a fresh census and delimitation. During the hearing, the Bench underlined that the case is about “political equality of women,” calling women—who constitute roughly 48% of the population—the country’s “largest minority.”
