The Indian government has taken a significant step by imposing immediate import restrictions on laptops, tablets, and certain types of computers in a bid to address security concerns and boost domestic manufacturing. The move comes as internet penetration increases in the country, raising concerns about potential security risks associated with imported hardware that could compromise sensitive and personal data.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification outlining the restrictions, which would require importers to seek permission or a license from the government for inbound shipments of these items. While the primary goal is to safeguard the security of citizens, the move also aims to curtail inbound shipments from countries like China and Korea.
