FIR against social media for IT rule breaches

The government has taken a decisive stance in assisting citizens who encounter objectionable content, particularly deep fakes, on social media platforms. Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, announced that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) is set to establish a platform for users to report violations of IT rules by these platforms.

Chandrasekhar emphasized Meity's commitment to aiding users in promptly notifying and filing FIRS against social media platforms found in violation of IT rules. "Meity will facilitate users in easily reporting IT rule breaches and guide them through the process of filing FIRS," stated the minister, reinforcing a zero-tolerance approach toward rule violations.
Following a meeting with representatives of social media platforms, Chandrasekhar affirmed that FIRS would be lodged against intermediaries. If these intermediaries divulge the content's source, the FIR will then target the entity responsible for posting the objectionable material.
