China has launched initiatives to economically integrate Taiwan’s Matsu Islands, also known as Lienchiang County, and increase political influence. Taiwanese authorities see these actions as a national security threat.

Beijing hopes that by bolstering economic ties, it can sway the local government and population of the islands to support Chinese administration. One part of the strategy involves improving shipping and investment connections between Fuzhou and the Matsu Islands, which are around 20 km apart.

Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), along with the local government, organized the 26th Cross-Straits Fair for Economy and Trade from May 16 to 19 in Fuzhou, the capital of China’s Fujian Province.
