BODOLAND'S SILK REVOLUTION: FROM INSURGENCY TO GLOBAL RECOGNITION
The Business Guardian
|February 27, 2025
Bodoland, once plagued by insurgency, has undergone a remarkable transformation since the 2020 peace accord, shifting its focus toward peace, development, and economic progress.

Now, the region is making strides on the global stage in silk production, emerging as a key player in India's textile industry.
With four to five lakh people engaged in silk production-including a significant number of women-Bodoland is witnessing a socio-economic shift. Youth are also actively participating, helping expand the region's silk industry. The production of raw Eri silk, known for its cruelty-free and eco-friendly properties, increased from 1,369 metric tonnes in 2019-20 to 1,464 metric tonnes in 2023-24. The target is set to reach 2,000 metric tonnes by 2027.

SILK PRODUCTION: A NEW ECONOMIC BACKBONE FOR BODOLAND
Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Pramod Boro emphasized that the peace agreement in 2020 paved the way for development across all five districts of Bodoland. Many villagers previously lacked employment opportunities and cultivable land. Silk production has since been identified as a stable source of livelihood, with thousands now engaged in insect rearing, spinning, and weaving.
Technical and financial assistance is being provided for silk production in key districts such as Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Baksa. The establishment of the Muga Wildlife Sanctuary in Chirang has further boosted the industry, providing employment to thousands, with some earning up to Rs.1.5 lakh annually. Over 250 villages in Chirang district alone are involved in silk production, directly supporting more than 10,000 families.
