Love is in the heir - mother and new girlfriend go head to head
Sunderland Echo
|September 22, 2025
Dads and daughters, mothers and sons; that's kind of how families work much of the time. No man will ever really be good enough for a daddy's princess - and no woman, however glamorous, can possibly replace a mum.
-

And for most of us, that works just fine. And in the latest Amazon Prime thriller The Girlfriend, a mother's intuition appears to be spot on-or is it? The dual narrative means nothing is as it seems.
Successful art gallery director and fabulously dressed 50-something Laura Sanderson (Robin Wright) has doubts about her son Daniel's new squeeze Cherry (Olivia Cooke) from the get-go.
At first glance Laura seems to have it all-a successful career, a devoted husband Howard (Waleed Zuaiter), an amazing wardrobe and an almost too close relationship with Daniel (Laurie Davidson).
But things begin to unravel when young Dan brings home his latest girlfriend Cherry.
It's fair to say the first meeting doesn't go well.
Before dinner at the Sandersons' house, Laura inadvertently catches a glimpse of Daniel and Cherry indulging in some off-menu hors d'oeuvres in the bedroom.
"Are they coming?" enquires Howard. "Well someone is..." Laura replies tartly.
