Mother's Day adventures: tailor the perfect day out for mom

MOTHER'S Day occurs annually, but your celebration of it doesn’t have to be repetitive.

- BERNELEE VOLLMER

Let’s face it, the usual last-minute flowers or a mediocre brunch at the regular spot just aren’t enough these days. Forget the supermarket blooms and gift her an unforgettable experience. Consider a weekend escape - a tranquil retreat with beautiful scenery. Whether her interests lie in exploring forests, appreciating fine art, or simply relaxing with champagne.

For the nature mom

If your mom notices every bird call and can name wildflowers without blinking, Elgin is perfect for her.

Tucked just past Grabouw, this lush valley in the Western Cape is all green hills, apple orchards, and that fresh-forest scent.

For something a little special, take her horseback riding at Long Shadows Farm, where gentle trails wind through farmlands and fynbos-covered hills.

It's a peaceful way to explore the area, with friendly, experienced guides who make sure everyone, whether a total beginner or saddle-seasoned, feels at ease. Stop by a farm stall for their famous Houwhoek Pies and browse fresh produce, jams, and handmade goodies. Then stroll through the Elgin Railway Market and enjoy a coffee, live music, and pastries that rival anything in the city.

If she’s up for a bit of adventure, there are forest trails perfect for slow hikes or scenic horseback rides through the fynbos. It’s all about nature, fresh air, and having space to breathe.

Or head to Stanford for a wine-and-water kind of weekend.

This sleepy Overberg village sits on a lazy river and is packed with small-town charm. Think riverside picnics, antique stores, and boutique wine farms serving top-notch cheese boards. You can even kayak down the Klein River.
