FA TROPHY
DEAN Nicholson hailed a 'fantastic' performance from Heaton Stannington as they moved on from their FA Cup disappointment by progressing in the FA Trophy with a fine home win against Emley.
Nicholson and assistant manager Andy McBride were left frustrated as their side fell to a 1-0 defeat in a tight and nervy FA Cup first qualifying round tie at Northern League club Newcastle Blue Star and called for a reaction from their players.
A Friday night tie with their Northern Premier League East Division rivals provided the perfect setting for their Stan squad to rise to the challenge and they did not let anyone down with a professional display in front a crowd of 372 at Willow Park.
A neat finish from Leighton Hopper opened the scoring 10 minutes before halftime as the former Bedlington Terriers forward lobbed the ball over visitors keeper Declan Lambton and into the empty net.
