Eco-charities' fury at safe catch plan delay

SUPERMARKETS are "dragging their heels" after promising to tackle the devastating environmental impacts of producing scampi, green groups have claimed.

A group of nine eco charities including Open Seas and Greenpeace warned the "destructive" method of bottom-trawling the Scottish seabed to catch prawns for scampi was unsustainable.

And they hit out at supermarket chains for "greenwashing" on scampi by labelling it "responsibly sourced".

It follows high-profile incidents of environmental destruction off Scotland's coasts from bottom-trawling, which rips up the seabed indiscriminately.
