Gary's gone from chicken to cheque in darts' ascent

GARY ANDERSON can take a step closer today to feasting on £1million - after tucking in to a chicken hamper for his first prize.

The Scot is in the hunt for the biggest cheque in the history of darts at the PDC World Championship.

Such vast sums are a far cry from his breakthrough days in the sport long before the Ally Pally spectacular.

The two-time champion was asked if he could recall what he won the first time he triumphed at an event.

“I think it was a chicken hamper and a free set of darts!” he said. “We used to play tournaments and, back in the BDO, you'd get beaten in the semis or the final and get a free set of darts or something like that.
